Heights wins TOC crown
Posted Jan 25, 2010 @ 12:50 AM
Bubba Starling was a dominating force in leading Class 5A Gardner-Edgerton High School to the Tournament of Champions title game Saturday at the Dodge City Civic Center. The superlative three-sport athlete garnered the accolades of the TOC individual sportsmanship and most inspirational player awards with his relentless play and rim-rattling slam dunks.

Hogan lifts Demons
Posted Jan 25, 2010 @ 12:54 AM
The hangover from the knock-your-socks-off 53-51 Tournament of Champions semifinal loss to Gardner-Edgerton lasted eight minutes into Saturday’s third-place game for Dodge City. The Red Demons looked to be in trouble after falling behind Hutchinson 20-15 after the opening quarter of consolation-game action. Yet Dodge City picked itself off the deck, survived the gut-check, clamped down defensively and limited the Salt Hawks to only 23 points over the next three quarters in grinding out a 56-43 victory to secure the third-place trophy.

SM South trips Manhattan
Posted Jan 25, 2010 @ 12:53 AM
Shawnee Mission South, which lost to Dodge City in the opening round of the Tournament of Champions on Thursday, won its last two games to take fourth place. On Saturday, the Raiders rolled past the Manhattan Indians, 55-31. South guards Will Spradling and Jake Reid led the Raiders in scoring with 13 points apiece. Spradling, who carried the Raiders in a triple-overtime losers’ bracket win on Friday, scoring 30 points, was named to the all-tournament team. Guard Zach Nelson, who led Manhattan with 13 points, was also selected to the all-tourney team.

Nelson propels Manhattan past Hays
In a battle of Indians during a Friday afternoon losers’ bracket game at the Tournament of Champions, the Manhattan High School Indians used a third-quarter run to surge past the Hays Indians 51-37 at the Civic Center. Senior guard Zach Nelson scored a game-high 20 points for MHS (4-5) in the low-scoring affair. Hays (8-3) was led by guard Dexter Pfeifer with 13 points.

Ellis-led Falcons soar

The neat thing about Class 6A top-ranked Wichita Heights High School center Perry Ellis is the fact he can put up big numbers within the flow of the Falcons’ offense. The 6-foot-8 Ellis, the top-rated sophomore in the nation by rivals.com, hit all eight of his field-goal attempts and tacked on 7 of 12 free throws for a game-high 24 points to lead Heights to a 60-44 win over Hutchinson Friday night in the semifinals of the Tournament of Champions.

South survives triple-overtime thriller with East
In triple overtime, Shawnee Mission South High School outlasted Wichita East 74-68 in a Tournament of Champions losers’ bracket thriller Friday afternoon. South guard Will Spradling simply would not let the Raiders lose. A Kansas State University early signee, Spradling scored half of his game-high 30 points in the trio of extra periods at the Dodge City Civic Center.

Cliff-hanger goes to Blazers
The Tournament of Champions semifinal matchup between host Dodge City High School and Gardner-Edgerton had all of the earmarks of a championship game. There was a packed house, featuring a raucous DCHS student body, at the Dodge City Civic Center in the Friday nightcap.
Every possession was critical in the tightly-contested game that went down to the wire and, of course, the outcome wasn’t determined until the final buzzer as Dodge City’s Landon Head’s desperation 3-point heave from just over 40 feet fell short at the buzzer. As a result, the Blazers celebrated on the court as they held on for a 53-51 triumph.

Hutchinson beats Hays in struggle
The Tournament of Champions lid-lifter Thursday afternoon found Hutchinson High School and Hays playing to a near-offensive standstill.
Suffice to say, points were at a premium.
At the outset of the fourth quarter, with Hutchinson clinging to a 29-27 lead, the Salt Hawks were able to melt the game clock down the stretch, sank some critical free throws and held on for a 41-37 victory at the Dodge City Civic Center.

Blazers overtake Aces

In a back-and-forth Tournament of Champions game between Gardner-Edgerton and Wichita East, two players in particular were the difference.
Connor Langrehr poured in 32 points and Bubba Starling added 30, leading Gardner-Edgerton to a 78-73 win over No. 4-ranked Wichita East in an opening-round game Thursday night at the Dodge City Civic Center.

Heights too much for Manhattan
Perimeter-shooting Manhattan High tried to slow things down against Class 6A top-ranked Wichita Heights Thursday afternoon.
Manhattan’s tempo wasn’t to the Falcons’ liking, but it mattered little, especially when Heights has the likes of 6-foot-8 center Perry Ellis and 6-4 junior swingman Evan Wessel.
Ellis had a double-double — 20 points and 10 rebounds — and Wessel almost had a triple-double — scoring 19 points, handing out nine assists and grabbing seven rebounds, leading Heights to a 69-52 win at the Dodge City Civic Center.

Demons stick fork in SM South
Dodge City High School jumped on the big stage of its own tournament and came through with one of its best performances of the season.
Especially in the opening 16 minutes. The host Red Demons, ranked No. 9 in Class 6A, built a 29-16 halftime lead and toppled No. 10 Shawnee Mission South 55-38 Thursday night in an opening-round game of the Tournament of Champions.

Simien has higher calling
Posted Jan 20, 2010 @ 11:59 PM
Wayne Simien still likes to head down to storied Phog Allen Fieldhouse on the University of Kansas campus for a little shootaround every once in a while with the Jayhawks. "I might shoot around or beat a couple of the KU guys in H-O-R-S-E or something like that," Simien, a former KU basketball All-American, said in a telephone interview Wednesday morning. "As far as getting up and down the court and playing, I really don't have the desire to do that. I am able to stay close to the game with my camps and things like that."
Simien has a higher calling these days, though, far removed from hardwood and the defeaning roar of a packed house of basketball crazies. Simien has turned his life to God, becoming a full-time minister in Lawrence.
