Red Demons finish in ninth place in team standings

DODGE CITY — It wasn’t the score that Dodge City High School junior Friyana Shah had envisioned. Yet Shah, the Red Demons top golfer, still managed to finish as a medalist, finishing in a tie for 17th place with Shawnee Mission East’s Anne Willman and Blue Valley North’s Stephanie Curran on Monday.

The Dodge City Lady Demon golfers finished 2nd in the final league standings for the WAC Conference. Each league school hosted a tournament and points were awarded and accumulated throughout the season. Four Lady Demons earned all conference honors. They were juniors Ali Bone, Friyana Shah, Brittany Waldman, and senior Krystal Martinez. Final results are listed below.

Red Demons gearing up for regionals

GREAT BEND — The Dodge City High School girls' golf team traveled to Great Bend on Tuesday for its final regular-season invitational.
At 165, Garden City took first place. Dodge City placed second with 175 and Hays was third at 193. The Western Athletic Conference began a new points system last year to determine the WAC championship teams and individuals. Each school in the WAC hosts a tournament, and earns points based off team and individual scores, according to Dodge City coach Jim Mapel. The points accumulate over the season, and the team and or individual with the most points is the WAC champion.

Dodge City finished in 2nd place at the Great Bend invitational on October 6th. The Lady Demons shot a 175 that trailed tournament winner Garden City by 10 strokes. Hays was third with a 193. Brittany Waldman led the Demons with a 43 good for 3rd place. Friyana Shah shot 46 finishing 5th, Krystal Martinez and Ali Bone shot 48 finishing 7th and 8th. Other scores were Sammi Kinkelaar 50 and Taylor Oldham 58.

The Dodge City Lady Demon golfers finished 4th at the 14 team Hutchinson invitational at Carey Park Golf Course on October 1st. Manhattan finished first with a score of 347 followed by Garden City 355, Goddard 361, and Dodge City at 364. Dodge City was led by Friyana Shah with an 89. Other scores were Sammi Kinkelaar 90, Brittany Waldman 92, Krystal Martinez 93, Ali Bone 98 and Taylor Oldham 104.

Friyana Shah finished 1st place in a field of 90 golfers to help the Lady Demons to a second place finish at the Wichita North invitational on September 30th at Sim Park Golf Course. Shah shot a personal best 76 followed by Krystal Martinez 88 (9th place) Brittany Waldman 90, Ali Bone 95, Taylor Oldham 98 and Sammi Kinkelaar 99. Garden City was first with a team score of 335 followed by Dodge at 349 and Kapaun Mt. Carmel and Bishop Carroll at 353.

Garden City won the Liberal invitational at Willow Tree Golf Course on September 24th. They shot a 153 followed by the Lady Demons with a 164. Hays was third with a 182. Krystal Martinez and Ali Bone fired personal best scores with a 39 and 40. Krystal finished 3rd and Ali 5th. Friyana Shah shot 40 and finished 7th, while Taylor Oldham shot 45 and tied for 9th. Other sccors were Alivia Owens with a 47, and Brittany Waldman 48.

The Dodge City Lady Demons competed at the Salina South invitational on September 22nd at the Salina Municipal Golf Course. They finished 3rd out of 13 teams. Manhattan won the tournament with a 326, followed by Garden City with 352 and then the Lady Demons with 359. Dodge City scores were Friyana Shah 88, Sammi Kinkelaar and Brittany Waldman 90, Krystal Martinez 91, Taylor Oldham 98, and Ali Bone 100.

Fifteen teams competed in the Garden City invitational on September 14th at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course. Dodge City shot 359 finishing three strokes behind champion Garden City. Hays was third at 386. Friyana Shah led Dodge City with a third place finish firing an 86. Ali Bone was 7th with a 90, while Brittany Waldman and Krystal Martinez finished 9th and 10th with scores of 91 and 92. Other Lady Demon scores were Sammi Kinkelaar with a 106 and Kim Schmalz with 112.

The Lady Demons finished 2nd in their 7 team invitational at Mariah Hills Golf Course on September 10th. Garden City was 1st with a team total of 170, followed by the Lady Demons at 174 and Hays at 186. Friyana Shah shot a 38 tying for medalist but lost a playoff to Mackenzie Thayer of Garden City. Brittany Waldman and Krystal Martinez shot 44 finishing 7th and 8th. Other scores were Ali Bone 48, Kim Schmalz 50, and Taylor Oldham 56.

HAYS — The Dodge City High Red Demons girls golf team finished second Monday at Hays. Garden City took first, while Hays took third. The Demons shot a team score of 193, 18 strokes behind Garden City who had a team score of 175.
