DCHS girls finish WAC with unprecedented 8-0 record
Dodge City High School engraved itself in the school record books, beating Liberal 58-35 on Friday night for the first undefeated Western Athletic Conference season in DCHS girls history. The Red Demons were never threatened in regular-season home finale at the DCHS Field House, closing the regular-season at 17-3 overall, including a perfect 8-0 in the WAC.
“We said something earlier in the season that we had an opportunity ahead of us,” DCHS head coach Justin Briggs said, “and our girls proved it tonight. “We’ve got a great group of girls and a great group of seniors and I’m real proud how they played.”

DCHS girls win WAC title outright
The Dodge City High School girls’ basketball team clinched the Western Athletic Conference championship Tuesday night with a 56-42 victory over Hays. “We got it wrapped up,” DCHS head coach Justin Briggs said. “It’s nice. Obviously, any time you win a league championship, it’s good.”
Sophomore guard Brenna Briggs nailed five 3-pointers, including a trio in the first half, to score a game-high 21 points for the Red Demons, who improved to 16-3 overall and 7-0 in the WAC.

Dodge City girls still undefeated in WAC pack
Slow-starting Dodge City High School fell behind Great Bend by five points at halftime Friday night at the DCHS Field House. These Red Demons are the Western Athletic Conference unbeaten leaders, though, so you knew they had a bounce-back in them.

Dodge City answers every Colby challenge
When non-conference foe Colby High School made a run at Dodge City in the fourth quarter Thursday night on Homecoming, the Red Demons answered back. A little earlier, Brenna Briggs. a sophomore southpaw, had a trio of second half 3-pointers. Moreover, DCHS held Colby scoreless during the opening five minutes of the third quarter, extended their lead to 14 points and coasted to a 48-31 victory. Dodge City, ranked No. 7 in the latest Class 6A Kansas Basketball Coaches Association poll, improves to 13-3 on the season.

Dodge City High School’s girls’ basketball team is ranked No. 7 in the latest Class 6A poll by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association. Better yet, fresh off a 59-28 victory over Hays High School Tuesday night at the DCHS Fieldhouse, the Red Demons are in first place in the Western Athletic Conference with a 4-0 record, one game ahead of Garden City (3-1). “Those rankings are nice right now,” DCHS head coach Justin Briggs said. “But we want to be there at the end.

Oritz's late free throws help DCHS sink Sunrise
WICHITA — Guard Valerie Ortiz converted two free throws inside the game’s final minute, lifting the Dodge City High School girls’ basketball team past Wichita Sunrise 48-46 Friday night. Wichita Sunrise, a private school, missed a pair of shots inside the 3-point arc in the final seconds, enabling the Red Demons to improve their record to 11-3 on the season.

Buckner has all-around game for DCHS girls

LIBERAL — Brenna Briggs scored a season-high 15 points, Valerie Ortiz added 12 points and Keasha Buckner scored 10, as the guard trio led the Dodge City High School girls’ basketball team to a 51-34 road victory over Liberal Tuesday night. Buckner added eight rebounds, four assists and two steals for the Red Demons, who are unbeaten atop the Western Athletic Conference at 3-0 and 10-3 overall. “She’s kind of a sparkplug for our team,” DCHS coach Justin Briggs said.

Dodge City girls beat familiar foe in Garden City

NEWTON — After two close losses at Ravenscroft Gym this season, the Dodge City Red Demon girls finally pulled away a win, stopping rival Garden City 59-48 Friday in the consolation semifinals of the 34th Newton Invitational. Ranked No. 10 in Class 6A, Dodge City (8-3) faces Rose Hill in the consolation finals at 2 p.m. today (the game may start early depending on the finish of the noon game). Garden City, 5-6, plays Olathe Northwest at noon for seventh place.

GREAT BEND — For the second game in a row, Dodge City High School senior guard Valerie Ortiz carried the Red Demons offensively. Fresh off a 20-point performance on Tuesday during a 58-30 win over Maize South.
In a 45-21 road win over Great Bend, Ortiz pumped in 23 points to lead the slow-starting Red Demons, who led 15-14 at halftime before blowing Great Bend out of its own gym in the second half, outscoring the Panthers 30-7 in the second half.

Ortiz leads DCHS in easy romp
DODGE CITY - No matter if they’re playing a Western Athletic Conference rival or a winless non-conference opponent, an offensive constant for the Dodge City High School girls’ basketball team is senior guard Valerie Ortiz. Ortiz lit up the DCHS Fieldhouse scoreboard for 20 points in the game’s first three quarters, including 16 in the first half, as the Red Demons throttled winless Maize South 58-30 Tuesday night.

In a Western Athletic Conference rivalry game between Dodge City High School and Garden City, a 12-0 decisive run extending from the second quarter into the third was the difference. Dodge City's girls scored the final seven points of the second period and then tacked on the first five points of the third quarter to open up a 32-20 lead en route to a 57-42 victory Tuesday night at the DCHS Fieldhouse.

Ashia Woods of Wichita Collegiate High School is everything as billed. A bona-fide NCAA Division-I prospect as a junior, Woods, a 5-foot-11 forward, bailed out her team every time Dodge City made a run Saturday night at the Collegiate Field House. She scored a game-high 22 points, grabbed eight rebounds and made eight steals in a 47-41 victory over the Red Demons (3-2). “We missed a lot of opportunities,” DCHS head coach Justin Briggs said. “We missed three easy baskets we should have made, but overall I thought we played pretty well. It was a back-and-forth game the whole time.”

DODGE CITY — Hitting the Manhattan High School Lady Indians from all directions in overtime, Dodge City pulled out a 54-50 win Saturday night. Valerie Ortiz totaled 17 points, Brenna Briggs scored 11 and Keasha Buckner put in 10 for the balanced Red Demons (2-0). A'zlynn Thompson added seven points and nine rebounds, and Codi Ehrlich had nine boards and five points.

DODGE CITY — When it came to crunch time, Dodge City scored just four points during the final three minutes, three seconds Friday night. Yet the Red Demons held on for a 47-41 victory as Valerie Ortiz and Kesha Buckner each made two foul shots in the final 12.3 seconds in season-opening play at the DCHS Field House.

DODGE CITY — The Dodge City High School junior varsity girls’ basketball team might have it made this season. The have a whole team full of talent, which showed when they beat the Salina Central Mustangs friday night 45-29.
