Surprise! DCHS boys win WAC outright
Needing a win to gain at least a share of first place in the Western Athletic Conference, the Dodge City High School boys' basketball team took care of business Friday night at the DCHS Field House. And then they got a little help from one of their WAC foes. The Red Demons drubbed outmanned Liberal 68-46 to wrap up the regular season 17-3 overall, and then DCHS (7-1 WAC) overtook Hays for the conference title outright after the Indians (6-2) lost to Great Bend 39-31 Friday night.

Hays denied the Red Demons the WAC title outright, handing DCHS its first conference loss of the season in pulling out a 56-49 victory.

This wasn't a modern-day version of Hoosiers. Oh sure, the final score was reminiscent of the old-school basketball movie: Dodge City High School 41, Great Bend 29.
Demons survive in OT after Hogan’s game-tying trey
The Dodge City High School boys' basketball team’s unbeaten Western Athletic Conference record seemed in peril. Trailing 52-49 at the end of regulation and the game clock melting, Dodge City sophomore guard triggered a 3-pointer from the left corner with 6.7 seconds left. Nothing but net. Hogan’s game-tying 3-pointer gave the Red Demons the momentum they needed in a hostile environment and a four-minute overtime period, as they registered a 58-55 win.
Homecoming Haymaker
After a first-quarter flourish, Dodge City High School was able to put it on cruise control Thursday night during non-conference action with Colby.
Dodge City opened up a 26-8 lead after one quarter, and effectively slammed the door shut on the Eagles during a 75-39 manhandling at the DCHS Fieldhouse. Ranked No. 5 in the latest Class 6A poll by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, the Red Demons (14-2) had little trouble with a 4A counterpart in Colby (5-10). Senior forward Terrance Williams poured in 21 points on 9-for-12 shooting, and sophomore point guard Rico Hogan added 15 points, including a trio of 3-point hits.

In a Western Athletic Conference showdown that turned into a slowdown, Dodge City High School held Hays scoreless the final 4:28 of regulation Tuesday night and grabbed sole possession of first place in the WAC with a 50-42 victory. DCHS (13-2), ranked fifth in Class 6A, improved to a WAC-leading 4-0. It used a game-ending 10-0 run as Hays (11-5, 3-1) went dormant down the stretch.

WICHITA — Rico Hogan had a trio of second-half 3-point hits — one in the fourth quarter — leading Dodge City High School past Wichita Sunrise, 44-40, Friday night in non-conference basketball action.

LIBERAL — Dodge City High School’s Terrance Williams and Landon Head combined for 31 points Tuesday night, leading the Red Demons to a 58-40 road win over the punchless Liberal Redskins The Demons (11-2 overall, 3-0 WAC) held just a 21-20 lead at intermission. A 19-6 third quarter that put Dodge City up 40-26 at the end of the period and eased some of DCHS coach Dennis Hamilton’s worries. “Coming out of halftime, I thought we played really well,” Hamilton said. “We just picked it up defensively, and the kids accepted the challenge. “We just didn’t settle for 3-pointers, and we got some things at the basket in transition and got a lot better on the boards.”

The hangover from the knock-your-socks-off 53-51 Tournament of Champions semifinal loss to Gardner-Edgerton lasted eight minutes into Saturday’s third-place game for Dodge City. The Red Demons looked to be in trouble after falling behind Hutchinson 20-15 after the opening quarter of consolation-game action. Yet Dodge City picked itself off the deck, survived the gut-check, clamped down defensively and limited the Salt Hawks to only 23 points over the next three quarters in grinding out a 56-43 victory to secure the third-place trophy.

Dodge City High School jumped on the big stage of its own tournament and came through with one of its best performances of the season.
Especially in the opening 16 minutes.
The host Red Demons, ranked No. 9 in Class 6A, built a 29-16 halftime lead and toppled No. 10 Shawnee Mission South 55-38 Thursday night in an opening-round game of the Tournament of Champions.

Dodge City High School boys' basketball coach Dennis Hamilton warned his team Tuesday night that visiting rival Garden City would ultimately make a run at the Red Demons in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both. Sure enough, with four minute remaining, Garden City, deliberately chipping away at a 32-19 halftime defict, crawled within 50-44 after Quentin Taylor sank the first of two free throws. The Demons, ranked No. 4 in the latest Class 6A Kansas Basketball Coaches Association poll, weren't about to be denied, finishing strong in posting a 59-46 victory.

It’s no wonder none of the Wichita City League schools have Class 3A powerhouse and top-ranked Wichita Collegiate on their basketball schedule. There’s a good chance they could get beat.

DODGE CITY — A defensive shutdown of Manhattan High School's 3-point arsenal in the second quarter Saturday night proved to be the difference for the Dodge City Red Demons. Dodge City used a 13-7 second-quarter burst to bolt to a 31-20 halftime lead and rolled to a 60-49 victory over the Indians at the DCHS Field House.

DODGE CITY — It must have been the first night jitters Friday night for the Dodge City junior varsity boys basketball team. Because Saturday night, they were a different team as they beat the Manhattan Indians 39-27. "It was good to get our first victory," junior varsity head coach Adam Hobbs said. "Guys played a lot harder and we had to get a lot of jitters out that first game.

DODGE CITY — The Dodge City High School junior varsity boys basketball team may have had the first game jitters Friday night. They fell to the Salina Central Mustangs (1-0) 59-45. The Red Demons (0-1) came out strong in the first quarter, demanding the attention of the crowd. They lead 17-14 at the end of the first.
